Ok, am gonna give my own two cents about something on my mind. When I first came into the US(traumatic experience, boh bu nen koh wah later!!) some years ago, U kno, I came from Jollof all exicted n stuff, I mean I had a pretty good fashion sense back then (all the latest fashion trends n stuff) I was pretty cool...chei trouble!! Ok, my first day I met a bunch of african students(my good friends now) they were pretty excited to meet the "new gambian gurl", I had on my jeans, a really cute pink top(my fave color), pink shoes, jwellery n bag(ham nga rek, sanseh jollof) I looked gud n stuff, ehh, I met them for lunch, wen I first walked in and introduced myself, "Hi am _______, am from Gambia( lol mangi muna slangs nak, ham nga rek) ....lol u shud have seen the expresions on their face, they were like "R u sure u from Gambia", I was like yea, Gambia by Senegal, they couldnt believe it, (mind u they were from, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Congo, Ethopia, Mali n Cameron)...I was like "y, is there a problem" they were like "nah its jus that we didnt expect someone like u"(WTF) I was like "wat do u mean, wat did u expect" they were like "No is not anything bad, u look african (am dark) and all is just that we r shocked, we never knew much about Gambia, is just that we thought it was this tiny country, u kno, but u look so american, u don even sound like african or have an accent) lol i was thinking "nyi bunj ma yap...nyak yi ni, lol WTF hana nyi hamung nyun denj heww" lol I didnt say that tho, I just laughed and took it as a compliment... from dat day on, I jus realized that "denj bad nak" lol
the point of the story is that in Gambia, we are so on point with our clothes, always had to have the latest fashions, know the latest american songs and dance etc, that when we get here we just fit right in and peeps dont understand that, look at these africans thinkin dat I was local n stuff, hana nyi hamung neh, nyun denj heww...bunj ma yap!!!
Lol from that they on, they looked at me like the fashionista!!! lol I love jollof
Share your first gambian fashion experience!! stories anyone?
